So while farting around in the Carmax lot I saw that there was an FR-S for a bit over $17k. Me being the fiscal fellow I am, I checked and apparently these require premium fuel. So I had a look at the revised Toyota 86 and it recommends 93 Octane or higher! What are the fun cars that only recommend 87 octane?

I know all the Hyundai engines are setup for 87 octane (it’s as much of a powertrain signature as the 10yr/100k warrnanty), but there must be sportier cars that only ask for the cheapest fuel.

I would not run any turbo engine on 87 octane...heck I wouldn’t run any car I bought for it’s ‘sportyness’ on 87.

All depends on compression.

I run my MR2 on 98 Octane. Take that different standards of measurements.

Same as the S! There’s actually a local gas station that sells 87,89, 92, and 93 octane so I can save a few cents by filling up with 92, which is pretty uncommon. Most gas stations (that I’ve ever seen) only carry 87, 89, and 93.

I’ve really only ever known the premium fuel life. The 1 car I had that didnt take premium was my AW11 MR2 and even then I felt guilty putting in 87 so it usually got 89 or 91.

The VW GTI says it technically runs on 87, I think the camaro and mustang v6's might be too.

The mazda mx-5, 3 and 6 are pretty fun too

Interesting thought... I’m curious to see the answers here.

Like somebody else said, my R53 Mini uses 91 so that’s a no-g0 (although it’s still lower than the normal 93 premium!)

Pretty much any (non-turbo?) car in a high-altitude State.

It makes sense for the S because it is supercharged. I was surprised when I got mine to learn it takes 93 (we have 93 in my area for the most part over 91). Though I am still saving money over my old Outback due to the fact that I am now getting almost 10 more MPG.

True, but like most turbos, the rated power and consumption figures are based on premium.

I’m pretty sure most modern “sports” cars can adjust timing and run just fine on 87 now. I wouldn’t put it in a F488, but a 340i is going to be fine.

The Mustang recommends 87: http://www.fordservicecontent.com/Ford_Content/v…

2.3L EcoBoost and 5.0L V8 Engines

We recommend regular unleaded gasoline with a pump (R+M)/2 octane rating of 87. Some stations offer fuels posted as regular with an octane rating below 87, particularly in high altitude areas. We do not recommend fuels with an octane rating below 87.

To provide improved performance, we recommend premium fuel for severe duty usage, such as trailer tow.

3.7L V6 Engines

We recommend regular unleaded gasoline with a pump (R+M)/2 octane rating of 87. Some stations offer fuels posted as regular with an octane rating below 87, particularly in high altitude areas. We do not recommend fuels with an octane rating below 87.

My Juke can run on 87, but it runs like crap. I normally run 91, I find 91 returns better fuel economy & performance. My old Sonic ran best on 87, but the 1.8L EcoTec could run on anything that would combust.

Acura Integra LS. You’ll lose the snarling VTEC motor, but it’s less high-strung and just as fun.

You can run 87 through an L83 or L98-equipped Corvette no issue. Yay low compression!

That said, I think refineries should standardize around 93 Octane that way engines can be made to run higher compression more widely without being more expensive to fuel. Increased efficiency for everybody!

You know they tuned the 2.3 on 87 just so it wouldn’t hit power numbers closer to the 5.0. The Livernois tune brings the power closer to 400 and torque to almost 425 ft-lbs at just peak numbers. It adds a bunch all over the curve as well.

I’m gonna throw the Genesis Coupe 3.8 in there. It has two fuel maps so it can run both 87 and 91 without any trouble.

Welcome to the future, where manufactures are increasing compression ratios to get as much efficiency out of the engines as possible, adding boost (in some cases) and needing fuel that has a higher knock rating.

Most cars will “technically” run on 87 even if they recommend higher because they have low octane maps for safety. Your power and gas mileage in the GTI would be compromised by using anything less than 91.

Fun fact... my uncle has an original survivor 69 Road runner with the 440 SIXPACK. He runs 100LL AvGas in it because it’s the closest thing he can get to high octane gas of the 60s. He says the car runs great on it and hasn’t had an issue in 20 years of using it
